Bi-lan and her family moved to Seattle in 1963 to start a new life back in America. She spent her years through high school in Tokyo, which greatly influenced her artistic path. She studied Fine Arts at the Cornish School of the Arts, studied painting at the San Francisco Institute of Art and the Seattle Studio School founded by Frank Okada. "Painting is a difficult path to follow which I did until my early 40's and since then have always had to make things with my hands and eyes." She did linocuts in her 30's and last year, found in her basement, her linocut blocks, some of which have never been printed.
