Mayuri, Ayako, and Yasuko live in Gobo, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. The met over 30 years ago at a temple gathering and have been close friends ever since.Two of them are the wives of Buddhist temple priests, while the third is the wife of a sake shop owner. They are now in their late 70s and often get together for meals and travel together. Their children are grown, and have their own children.
About four years ago, a friend taught them how to weave baskets. They learned quickly and became skilled. At first, they made baskets for themselves and their families, but before long, friends and acquaintances offered to purchase the baskets. They decided to sell some at the sake shop on an empty shelf.
Today, they continue to weave baskets at their own pace, mainly to keep their hands active and their minds sharp.
These basket bags are woven with coated recycled paper cord and flats. Not only are they lightweight and durable, they are beautiful, too.
