This charming calendar is from Karhu Studios in Kyoto, Japan. Clifton Karhu (1927-2007) was an American who moved to Japan in 1955. He learned ukiyo-e, woodblock printing, and made his own prints which he was known for, both in Japan and worldwide.
These images are his illustrations inspired by Japanese proverbs. Every month is a different proverb written in Japanese and English in his handwriting, his whimsical painting, and the days of the month below.
Each 12-month calendar is bound at the top edge. Cord is attached to hang. This is a long, very vertical format, some describe it as scroll-like. It is rolled and packed in a gift box, tied with ribbon.
