Aizu is an area in Tohoku (the northernmost region of Japan), and was the northernmost for growing cotton. Aizu cotton (Aizu momen) started its history In the Edo period and has developed well because of the scarcity of cotton in the Tohoku region. It also has great value and is highly priced. Aizu cotton is well known for its distinctive "jijima" (stripe patterns). These patterns have become a symbol of many of those communities where cotton is harvested: Aizuwakamatsu, Minamiaizu, Inawashiro, Kitakata, Aizubange, and Nishiaizu.
