Hariko Tiger 54 - Shimane

Vintage Hariko Tiger from Izumo
Artist: Koichi Takashi

The "Hariko Tiger" is a representative folk toy from Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, created by artist Koichi Takashi. In the Izumo region, there has long been a tradition of displaying tigers as talismans for protection, as they are believed to bring good fortune, particularly in battles and competitions. The "Hariko Tiger" is distinctive for its unique facial features, characterized by long, upward-curving whiskers and a bold, flamboyant appearance that resembles heavy makeup. This charming design was even featured on the New Year's postage stamp in 1962.
