Eric Nelsen: Anagama Fired Ceramic Pieces

Hyotan Bud Vase with Jizō 02 - Eric Nelsen

This hyotan shaped vase with a Jizō inclusion is wood-fired in an anagama (traditional Japanese wood burning tunnel kiln). Hyotan is the Japanese word for gourd.

Jizō is the compassionate bodhisattva who vowed to alleviate the suffering of all beings in the realms of existence and guide souls to salvation, best known as the guardian of children, travelers, and expectant mothers. Historically, statues were placed along rural roads, mountain passes, and treacherous paths to protect travelers and mark safe routes. He frequently holds a wish-fulfilling jewel in one hand and a monk's staff (shakujo) in the other.
