Hojicha Powder by Flowering Waters

Toasty Comfort. Naturally Grounding. Tasting Notes: Roasted nuts, caramel, warm toast.

Loose Powder Tea, 30g

Hojicha is a roasted Japanese green tea celebrated for its soothing aroma and warm, toasty flavor. Crafted from carefully roasted green tea leaves and stems, this tea carries notes of caramelized sweetness and gentle earthiness, with none of the bitterness found in other teas.

Caffeine: Low to no caffeine

Our finely milled Hojicha powder dissolves easily in hot water, creating a smooth, nutty brew that’s both calming and aromatic. Perfect for an afternoon pause or a cozy evening ritual. A beautiful tea for winding down — earthy, round, and softly sweet.

Brewing Tip: 1 tsp per 8 oz of 170–210°F water. Stir and enjoy.

Into a bowl with a pouring spout (she uses a matcha bowl called a katakuchi), add 1½ tsp hojicha (roasted green tea) powder. If you want to sweeten your beverage, add ½ tsp sugar (optional). Tip: If you‘re using a regular whisk instead of a bamboo whisk, she recommends sifting the hojicha powder into a cup using a fine-mesh strainer. Fine powders become lumpy once you add hot water.

Add 2 Tbsp hot water. Hojicha powder does not mix well into cool/cold water. With a bamboo whisk (chasen) or flat whisk, mix the tea powder and hot water briskly back and forth, drawing a letter W. Mix until no lumps remain, about 20 seconds. The hojicha mixture should be smooth and a little foamy.

Steam and froth the milk. Pour the tea mixture into the cup. Pour the steamed milk into the center of the hojicha mixture, ending with light foam.

Other uses: baking with hojicha, or simply replace any recipe calling for matcha with hojicha!
