Artist Talk, August 9, 2026, Kei Shimaoka "Renewing Functional Traditions"

KOBO Japantown
Sunday, Aug 9, 2pm

Kei Shimaoka was born in Mashiko in 1978 and graduated from the Tochigi Prefecture Ceramics Guidance Center in 1997, the same year he started as an apprentice to his grandfather, Tatsuzo Shimaoka. He completed his apprenticeship and started exhibiting in 2003. In 2005 he was adopted as the second son (designated by his grandfather to continue carrying on the family/studio traditions.) He took over the pottery in 2007, after the death of Tatsuzo Shimaoka. He has shown work at many major exhibitions in Japan.
