“These Kokeshi inspired dolls are made from wood that I harvest mostly from my neighborhood. The type of wood, size and shape varies. They are made from a single piece of wood and are typically finished with Shellac and Linseed oil. These are both natural and very safe finishes.” - Woodworker Steve Faiks

Japanese Kokeshi History
A 150-year craft, hand carved and painted kokeshi (wood dolls) were made for children and as a souvenir for regional hot spring (onsen) villages. Shapes, facial features, flowers, colors or no decoration at all, depended on the region.
