When the Zen monk
Jōshū  (778–897) was asked whether a dog had Buddha nature, he replied "Mu." meaning that neither ‘Yes” nor ‘No’ answered the question. The question itself must be “unasked”, that categorical thinking is, in fact, a delusion. Mu becomes the appropriate answer when the context of the question becomes too small for the truth of the answer. The Buddha nature cannot be captured by yes or no questions.
