14th Annual The Simple Cup Show - November 5, 2022

Sneak Preview the Cup Show here <link>.

The Simple Cup showcases contemporary interpretations of the cup. This year's guest curators are George Rodriguez and Chanakarn "Punch" Semachai, and sponsored by KOBO Seattle and Seward Park Clay Studio. We are expecting over 225 cups from artists across the United States, Japan and Thailand!

Our opening event on November 5th is all about the cup lottery sale, which allows people a fair chance to buy one of their favorite cups (scroll down for more details). Join us in our 14th year of this annual tradition.

You may preview the cups earlier in the day on Nov. 5th from 11 o’clock onwards.  At 1:45 pm we will ask everyone to go out to Chiyo’s Garden behind the store to participate in choosing a number and clearing the store in preparation for the sale to begin inside. (We are allowing only a certain number of people in the store at one time, to keep everyone safe.  Masks will be required when inside the store).

Cup Lottery Details

  • 1:00-2:00pm - Draw a number out in Chiyo’s garden

  • 2:00pm - #1-10 will pick a cup to purchase, then #11-20, etc.

  • Peter Olsen, director of the Seward Park Clay studio will lead the lottery sale which will begin promptly at 2:00pm.

Meet at Chiyo’s Garden

Reception will be held outside in Chiyo’s Garden behind KOBO at Higo accessed from Nihonmachi Alley. Dress warmly and be prepared for weather. We’ll have hot beverages and some simple snacks.

The lottery sale will begin at 2:00 pm. Buyers whose numbers are called will be guided to KOBO Gallery in groups of 10 to make their selections. They will have 10 mins to make a selection and move to the sales area. At that point, we will allow 10 more people to make their selection, etc.

Once the lottery sale is complete, all are welcome to purchase the available cups.

More Details

We ask that all purchased pieces be displayed until Nov.16, so others who missed the opening can view the show in its entirety. Cups will be available for pickup beginning, Wednesday, November 16th.

After the opening day

The remaining unsold cups will be available for purchase in the gallery and online through December. Cups purchased online will be packed and shipped after 11/16/22.
